Roanoke has five seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Termite Season. We are inevitably entering into termite season. The air is warming, and the ground is wet; this is the perfect breeding ground for termite infestations.

The most common termite in Roanoke is the subterranean termite. Subterranean termites are white to dark brown in color, have six legs, a set of antennae, and have narrow bodies roughly 1/8 inch long. They have a rigid caste system, including workers, soldiers, reproductive swarmers, and a king and queen. Subterranean termites build their colonies underground to find moisture and protection from the elements. The swarmers are sexually developed termites with wings. They swarm, or mate, in Roanoke from March to June. During this mating dance, swarmers reproduce and spread out to create more colonies. This is the most common time for a termite infestation to begin.

How Do I Know If My Roanoke Home Has Termites?

Fear not, homeowners! Subterranean termites do make themselves known to those who keep a watchful eye. Some of the signs of a subterranean termite infestation include, but are not limited to:

  • Mud tubes - these are tubes that subterranean termites create out of soil and saliva so that they have a sheltered means of transportation.
  • Bubbling paint - as walls warp due to the lack of solid structure beneath, you may notice paint warping and bubbling.
  • Piles of feces that resemble sawdust near the nest - subterranean termites push wastes outside of their nests, and these little presents may pop up in or around the home.
  • Discarded wings from swarmers - once swarmers find their mate, they shed their wings and start a new colony.
  • Hollow timber - often wood can look fine on the outside but have chunks carved out from the inside; giving the wood a tap should reveal a hollow sound if termites have been there.
  • Tunnels - subterranean termites carve out smooth tunnels as they eat through wood.

It is hard to spot a termite infestation, especially if it hasn't been around long. Signs of termites typically surface when an infestation is well underway. If you're worried about termites, it's best to reach out to a professional. Our team of experts at Star City Pest Control will come to your home and inspect your property for signs of termites. We even have preventative termite treatments to ensure this pest doesn't become a problem in the future.

What Does A Termite Infestation In Roanoke Look Like?

A subterranean termite infestation can occur on the exterior or the interior of your home. The main attraction for termites is untreated wood or wet wood. If you have water damage, you are likely to attract termites. As subterranean termites live underground and have mud tubes to travel to and from your home, you may not actually see the subterranean termites until it is too late. The damage they cause is costly and can lead to dangerous living situations for you and your family. If left untreated, termites will destroy your foundation, floors, roofing, and wall frames until your home is crumbling down around you.
